Angel Loves Indies... Asiatic Thai Massage

Asiatic, 93 Upper Street
Spa owner and local resident, Ben Pianese, has lived and worked in Angel since 1997. Hi Ben! Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into your current role.
My journey began unexpectedly in 2001 after a fall while ice skating. That injury sparked a lifelong fascination with human anatomy and the 'original source' of healing traditions. I began as a solo therapist, but I was also a digital pioneer; I started building my first websites in 2005 when the online health space was nearly empty. By 2009, I was mentoring my business partner as we established our first practice at 93 Upper Street—I personally handled the shop design, signage, and training. I’ve always been a 'student investigator' of both the body and digital design, which led me to evolve Asiatic from a traditional practice into a modern Somatic Atelier.
Tell us about your business and offering. Asiatic is a specialised Somatic Boutique. The name 'Asiatic' honours the ancient healing lineages of the East, which we refine through a modern lens. We offer the Asiatic Somatic Sequence—a proprietary blend of deep-tissue structural work and Eastern pressure-point therapy. We don’t just offer 'massages'; we offer anatomical correction and recovery. Our space is unique because it wasn't designed by a paid firm—we are the architects of our own studios. From the lime-wash walls to the heritage-inspired layout, every inch is curated to provide an authentic Clinical Atelier experience.
What is your business inspiration? What influences the business choices you make?
I am deeply inspired by Architectural Integrity and the history of craftsmanship. Our choices are guided by the legacy of the spaces we inhabit—such as 93 Upper Street’s history as a 1970s tailor centre. I believe a business should age like a bespoke garment: with grace, quality, and precision. We prioritise 'Clinical Lineage' and genuine expertise over fleeting high-street trends.
What are your main challenges?
Our biggest challenge is maintaining the integrity of authentic healing in a digital age flooded with 'shallow' alternatives. We fight against the 'high-volume' model to ensure every client receives bespoke attention. Protecting a 17-year heritage from digital misrepresentation and 'ghost' competitors is a constant battle, but it’s one we win by staying true to our physical presence and our deep local roots.
Who is your typical customer?
The 'Asiatic Client' values substance over spectacle. We serve a sophisticated community of architects, writers, and doctors, alongside a very strong international base—including clients from China, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, and across Europe and America. Many are pioneers themselves who have been loyal to us since 2009. They travel from all over London—from London Bridge to Brixton—because they aren't looking for a quick fix; they are seeking a long-term partner in their physical wellbeing.
What makes your business unique? Why should people visit?
We are the Original Blueprint of Upper Street. People visit us because walking through our doors feels like coming home. You can feel the authenticity and the unique personality of our staff, whose skills are as precise as a surgeon’s and as restorative as an artist’s touch. We offer a level of biomechanical literacy that you simply won't find in a standard, corporate spa.
Do you have any upcoming events we can help you share?
On May 7 we unveiled our newly restored Atelier at 93 Upper Street. This isn't just a renovation; it’s a return to our roots. We are designing a space that is impossible to 'remix' or copy because it is so personal. We’re inviting the N1 community to experience the Somatic Archive—a cosy, respectful space where you can breathe, relax, and feel truly honoured while we enhance your wellbeing.
What's it like working in Angel, what do you enjoy about it? I have lived and worked in Angel since 1997. Originally from South Italy, I’ve spent half my life here. Working in Angel feels like living inside a history book. I love the 'Tactile Heritage'—from the Schram & Scheddle gold-leaf signs on our second branch at 262 Upper Street to the literary echoes of George Orwell nearby. There is a sense of 'Trade Continuity' here that is rare in London. Being a Custodian of a piece of Upper Street for nearly two decades is an honour I carry with me every day.
